Mérida, Yucatán — In an effort to revitalize and strengthen tourism in the region, the Secretariat of Tourism Development (SEFOTUR) recently presented the National Strategy for the Strengthening of Magical Towns to the mayors of Yucatán’s seven municipalities that hold this designation. The event took place at the International Congress Center and aligns with the vision of the Maya Renaissance government, led by Joaquín Díaz Mena.

The strategy aims to consolidate these Magical Towns as fundamental pillars of regional tourism, job creators, and promoters of Yucatán’s rich cultural, natural, and historical heritage. State and federal authorities attended the meeting to outline necessary actions in accordance with guidelines established by the federal Secretariat of Tourism (SECTUR).

Five Key Pillars for Sustainable Tourism

During the meeting, Darío Flota Ocampo, Secretary of Tourism Development for the State of Yucatán, emphasized the importance of providing technical guidance and strategic promotion to these municipalities. Discussions centered on the five core principles of the national strategy:

  1. Tourism Planning and Sustainable Development
  2. Investment in Infrastructure
  3. Professional Training
  4. Comprehensive Promotion
  5. Marketing of Tourist Experiences

Flota Ocampo reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to maintaining constant oversight and offering necessary technical support to ensure that Magical Towns not only retain their designation but also develop their tourism potential sustainably and competitively.

Strategic Promotional Platforms

Additionally, officials announced that these municipalities will be promoted on key tourism platforms, including the 2025 Magical Towns Fair and the 2026 Mundo Maya Tourism Fair. Through these initiatives, the State Government seeks to ensure that the benefits of tourism reach more families while strengthening the sector’s capabilities in Yucatán—all within a sustainable and identity-driven framework.

The strategy underscores Yucatán’s broader goal of fostering economic growth through tourism while preserving its unique cultural and historical legacy.
