Mérida, Yucatán — The Secretary of Rural Development (Seder) has reported that 71 new cases of screwworm infestation were detected in the last week across 25 municipalities in Yucatán, bringing the state's total number of registered cases to 658. The affected animals include cattle, sheep, canines, and swine, ranging in age from three days old to 12 years.

The lesions were primarily found on the navel, vulva, cervical region, and ears. These wounds were caused by factors such as ear tagging, barbed wire, fights among the animals, ticks, and bites from hematophagous bats.

Municipal Case Breakdown

The municipalities of Tzucacab, Chacsinkín, Hoctún, Conkal, Dzidzantún, Valladolid, Ixil, Izamal, Sotuta, Kopomá, Panabá, Cacalchén, Huhí, Santa Elena, and Cenotillo each registered one case.

Tekax presented 2 cases; Kantunil and Oxkutzcab, 3 cases each; Peto, 4; Río Lagartos and Tunkás, 5 cases each; Mérida, 11; Halachó, 7; San Felipe, 6; and Tizimín, 10 cases.

With these figures, a total of 77 municipalities in the state have now detected cases of this disease.

Coordinated Response and Recovery

Thanks to immediate attention from Seder and the National Service for Agrifood Health, Safety, and Quality (Senasica), in coordination with Local Livestock Associations (AGL), as well as the free treatment applied—primarily with Negasunt powder—the affected animals have successfully recovered.

Seder insisted on the importance of immediately reporting all suspected cases through official channels: by phone at 800 751 21 00, via WhatsApp at 55 39 96 66 42, or through the Avise application, in order to guarantee timely detection.

Through these coordinated actions, the State Government is reinforcing strategies for the control of the screwworm (myiasis) and the protection of the health of Yucatán's livestock herd.
