Mérida, Yucatán — Yucatan’s tourism department has launched a new wellness-focused initiative called Maya Wellness Weekend, scheduled for March 20-22 to coincide with the spring equinox, aiming to attract visitors interested in holistic experiences.

The strategy, presented by the Secretariat of Tourism Development (Sefotur), includes a series of activities organized by tourism service providers across the state. The program seeks to integrate practices that promote connection with nature and balance between body, mind, and spirit, inspired by Maya culture.

Strategy to Diversify Tourism Offerings

During the presentation, Margarita de Abril Navarro Favela, director general of the Technical Secretariat of Tourism Intelligence at Sefotur, and Dulce María Tur Rodríguez, director of Strategy, emphasized the importance of involving more businesses and tourism operators to build a varied schedule of activities.

They invited service providers in the sector to join with special proposals that can be part of the weekend program. The goal is to create an offering that allows visitors to choose from different wellness-related experiences.

The strategy is part of efforts led by state governor Joaquín Díaz Mena to expand tourism segments in Yucatan and leverage its natural, cultural, and spiritual heritage.

Activities in Mérida and Inland Areas

So far, 15 companies have registered to participate in Maya Wellness Weekend, preparing public activities that will take place in Mérida and various municipalities inland.

The list of participants is still being updated. Interested individuals can check Sefotur’s social media for the geolocation of each experience to choose their preferred site during the event.

As part of promoting the wellness segment, content creator Karla Barajas will also be integrated, documenting her tour of Yucatan with photos, videos, and recommendations for those seeking this type of tourism experience.

Special Activity at Cenote Zací

Among the planned actions is an event scheduled for March 21 at Cenote Zací in Valladolid. Sefotur will organize the activity in coordination with the Municipal Tourism Directorate, with participation from tourism sector allies who will visit the site to strengthen its promotion.

Through such initiatives, the state agency aims to promote authentic and sustainable experiences while fostering tourism activity in different regions of Yucatan and generating benefits for local communities.

Those interested in participating can register through the link provided by Sefotur to be part of the Maya Wellness Weekend activity program.
