Yucatán, Mexico — Yucatán has reaffirmed its status as a national benchmark for public safety, closing the first ten months of 2025 with only 26 intentional homicides, the lowest figure in the country and equivalent to just 0.1 percent of the national total, according to recent data from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (Sesnsp).

In October alone, only three cases were documented, a number that other states reach in a matter of hours. This confirms the stability of the Yucatán security model, which has proven capable of enduring beyond different administrations and political circumstances.

An Ecosystem Formed by Government and Society

The state's security strategy, consolidated over more than a decade, relies not only on police reaction to crimes but also on a combination of social prevention, community proximity, and the intensive use of technology. The video surveillance system, permanent road safety and community coexistence campaigns, and the constant professionalization of police forces form an ecosystem that favors the reduction of lethal violence and the creation of safe urban environments.

To this institutional component is added an intangible yet decisive factor: citizen trust. In cities like Mérida, Progreso, or Valladolid, the perception of tranquility is already part of the everyday landscape, fueled by community dynamics that facilitate preventive work and the early resolution of conflicts.

The state faces new challenges—accelerated urban growth, labor mobility, the arrival of new inhabitants, and an increase in tourism—without this having significantly altered its indicators. On the contrary, intentional homicides decreased by 27.5 percent compared to the same period last year, demonstrating a solid and adaptable strategy.

On a regional level, it is noteworthy that Quintana Roo managed to reduce intentional homicides by 57.3 percent in one year, placing it among the three states with the greatest reduction in this crime. The neighboring state recorded 253 intentional homicides, just 1.3 percent of the national total, and counted 17 cases in October.

National Context Shows Overall Decline

Nationally, the reduction in murders also shows a clear trend. Data from the Sesnsp reveals that between September 2024 and October 2025, the country reduced its daily average of homicides by 37 percent, dropping from 86.9 per day at the start of the current federal government to 54.5 in October 2025, the lowest level in 13 months.

When compared with earlier periods, the decline is even more pronounced: while an average of 100 daily homicides were registered in 2018, the figure in 2025 hovers around 66.

However, homicidal violence remains concentrated in seven states—Guanajuato, Chihuahua, Baja California, Sinaloa, State of México, Guerrero, and Michoacán—which collectively account for half of all murders registered nationally. In October, Chihuahua led the list with 9.2 percent of homicides, followed by Guanajuato (8.6 percent) and Sinaloa (7.7 percent), territories where disputes among criminal groups continue to dictate the dynamics of violence.
