Cancun, Quintana Roo — A 23-year-old man nearly drowned Friday afternoon after rescuing a friend from strong waves at Playa San Miguelito in Cancun’s hotel zone, emergency officials reported.
Firefighters assigned as lifeguards during the Holy Week holiday season provided first aid to the young man, who showed signs of drowning and required hospital transport for medical attention.
The incident occurred during peak vacation season when beaches experience heavy visitor traffic. According to initial reports, the man, identified as Juan Carlos, entered the water to save a friend who was being pulled by the strong current, nearly drowning himself in the process.
Other beachgoers helped pull the struggling man to shore before firefighters arrived. Private ambulance paramedics transported him to a hospital for treatment.
Emergency response involved firefighters coordinating with Civil Protection lifeguards and paramedics as part of Holy Week security operations.
This marks the second water rescue at Playa San Miguelito this week. Two days earlier, lifeguards rescued three people—two minors and one adult—from a rip current at the same beach. The adult required hospital transport while the minors received on-site evaluation.
