Worker killed in machinery accident at Puerto Aventuras construction site

Puerto Aventuras, Quintana Roo — A workday ended in tragedy on Tuesday afternoon when a worker lost his life after being crushed by heavy machinery at the entrance to the Puerto Maya subdivision in the Guadalquivir area of Playa del Carmen.

According to initial reports, the man was working as a machinery assistant and was participating in excavation work, allegedly for the construction of a well, alongside and behind various businesses, including a Waldo’s store, which were not part of the construction project.

During the operation of the equipment, which was being operated by another person, the worker reportedly approached a moving belt in a dangerous manner. In a moment of carelessness, he was caught by the machinery and dragged by the metal structure, becoming trapped between the iron components.

Witnesses indicated that the equipment practically ran over him, causing extremely serious injuries. The incident generated panic and desperation among other workers and people in nearby establishments.

After the report to emergency number 911, elements of Civil Protection, Firefighters, and paramedics were mobilized, who performed maneuvers to free the worker; however, upon extracting him, they confirmed that he no longer had vital signs.

The area was cordoned off by security corporations to allow the work of emergency teams and prevent additional risks, while activities in the area were temporarily suspended.

Subsequently, personnel from the State Attorney General’s Office and Forensic Services carried out the corresponding procedures and the removal of the body for transfer to the Forensic Medical Service. Authorities are investigating the conditions of workplace safety, as well as the possible responsibility of the machinery operator and the construction project, whose identity and compliance with protocols have not yet been reported.
