Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A woman remains in critical condition after being set on fire by her partner in an act of domestic violence. Medical staff at Playa del Carmen General Hospital are fighting to save her life, with plans to transfer her to Mexico City for specialized treatment.
Attack Follows Domestic Dispute
According to reports from the Solidaridad Municipal Public Security and Transit Secretariat, the incident occurred last Friday in the Bellavista neighborhood. The victim was doused with gasoline and set ablaze by her partner following an argument.
Raúl Tassinari González, Municipal Secretary of Public Security and Transit, stated: "On Friday around 9 p.m., we received a 911 call reporting domestic violence. A woman was injured due to burns. This occurred after her romantic partner had an argument with her, left, and then returned to pour gasoline on her and set her on fire."
Victim in Grave Condition
Medical sources at Playa del Carmen General Hospital confirmed that as of yesterday afternoon, the woman remained in serious condition with deep second-degree burns. Authorities are arranging her transfer to Mexico City for advanced medical care.
Feminist Collective Demands Justice
Following the attack, the feminist collective Siempre Unidas (Always United) called for justice for the victim, identified as Yessenia. In a post on their official Facebook page, the group wrote: "Today in Playa del Carmen, Yessenia was set on fire by her partner. Her condition is critical. We demand justice! We hope with all our hearts that she survives this act of machista violence. Stay strong, sister—your pack is here with you!"
Suspect Still at Large
Tassinari González confirmed that the alleged perpetrator has not yet been apprehended. Authorities are collaborating with ministerial officials to locate him.
"The suspect fled in a gray Cherokee SUV, which was later abandoned in Puerto Aventuras. We have not stopped searching and will find the aggressor," Tassinari stated.
While initial reports suggested both individuals had been drinking alcohol, Tassinari emphasized: "That does not excuse the person's actions. We are all responsible for what we do, and he committed a crime."
This case marks one of the most severe incidents of violence against women reported in Playa del Carmen.
