Volvo EX30 Fire Snarls Traffic at Puerto Morelos Highway Entrance

Firefighters working to extinguish a burning electric Volvo EX30 stopped on Federal Highway 307 at the entrance to Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo

Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo — An electric Volvo EX30 burst into flames on Federal Highway 307 at the entrance to Puerto Morelos, clogging traffic on the highway that links Cancún and Playa del Carmen.

The fire was reported shortly after 8 a.m. beside the overpass on the federal highway, next to a bus stop serving passengers heading to Playa del Carmen. People waiting at the stop called the 911 emergency number, and the alert reached the Puerto Morelos fire department, whose station sits close to the scene.

Initial accounts indicated that a possible failure in the SUV’s electrical system started the blaze in the engine area, and flames spread quickly along the underside of the vehicle. The driver managed to get out in time, and no injuries were reported.

By the time firefighters arrived, flames had completely engulfed the vehicle. Crews worked to knock down the fire and brought the situation under control.

The SUV was in the left lane, close to the overpass and a few yards from the roundabout that leads to Puerto Morelos’s tourist zone and the main entrance to the town center, which brought traffic to a standstill for a time.
