Villas del Sol Downgraded to Yellow on Playa del Carmen Gender Violence Map

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The Villas del Sol subdivision has dropped from red to yellow on the gender violence heat map kept by Mexico’s National Commission to Prevent and Eradicate Violence Against Women (Conavim), according to Idania Gamboa Medina, director of the Women’s Institute of Playa del Carmen.

Gamboa Medina said the yellow rating reflects more moderate levels of gender violence in the neighborhood.

Working to Lift the Gender Violence Alert

She said several municipal agencies are working alongside the state government and federal authorities to address observations Conavim issued previously. The work forms part of efforts to lift the Gender Violence Alert issued for Playa del Carmen, which has now been in effect for nine years.

As part of those efforts, authorities enter detailed information into a Conavim digital platform, documenting how complaints are handled and followed up, along with data on public programs and policies and on measures such as cleaning and lighting of public spaces.

Promoting a Culture of Reporting

The institute director said the municipality is also encouraging residents to file complaints, which has driven up the number of reports received and services provided. She noted that reporting also allows authorities to intervene in potential cases of violence before situations escalate to dangerous levels.

Emergency Services App in the Works

The municipality is preparing a digital application for emergency services that will allow residents, including women, to reach a range of emergency services from a single platform, Gamboa Medina said. The app is to be unveiled soon.

The Women’s Institute served 8,446 people during the first half of the year, according to its director.
