Cancún, Mexico — A group of more than 50 residents from Valle Verde staged a peaceful protest outside the offices of the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) in Cancún, denouncing excessively high bills they received this month, which exceeded 1,000 pesos when they typically pay 200 or 300 pesos.
The protesters claimed to represent over 300 families in Valle Verde, who have faced nearly 20 years of issues with CFE due to collective payments they must make, as they are unable to obtain separate meters because the area is considered irregular.
Osmar Reynosa Castellano, a Valle Verde resident, stated that consumption this month has more than tripled, which cannot be justified by any reduction in subsidies or increases in kilowatt-hour rates, as even considering these factors, such a high charge is unwarranted.
“It is not fair that while there is a neighboring colony that is clandestine, about which they have been informed and they do not act, we are the most affected, despite being the ones who actually pay,” complained this citizen, referring to the Avante colony, where there are areas without charges.
“There are those who are sick, unemployed, or elderly, and they charge us a monthly consumption of 1,075 pesos. There are those who only have a light bulb and a fan and receive that amount,” he argued. “We are tired and will demand our rights, though peacefully.”
Another Valle Verde resident complained that they have suffered unfair charges for years, calling on other irregular colonies to join their claim.
“That is why we changed the previous electrification committee; the charges start to skyrocket, they change it, and it gets under control, but then it happens again,” she commented.
The group was attended by a CFE official, with whom they agreed to hold a meeting tomorrow with a delegation.
