Bernardo Cueto Riestra, the Secretary of Tourism for the state of Quintana Roo, has acknowledged the need for increased security measures in the region’s tourist hotspots in response to ongoing crime. This follows the United States’ decision to maintain its travel advisory for the area, urging its citizens to exercise extreme caution when visiting.
According to the US advisory, Quintana Roo remains at a level two alert, indicating a heightened risk to safety. Riestra has expressed concern over this status, suggesting that the issue should not be taken lightly by authorities. He stated, “We should not simply report one death today and another the next. These are serious matters that should concern all of society and require immediate attention.”
In response to these concerns, the Sedetur (the state’s tourism department), the State Attorney General’s Office, and the Secretariat of Citizen Security have established a security council. This group is tasked with ensuring the safety of all tourists in the event of any incidents.
