UNTRAC Leader César Contreras Killed Near Cancún

Cancún, Quintana Roo — César Contreras Arteaga, a delegate of the National Union of Transportistas del Cambio (UNTRAC) and leader of local motorcycle taxi operators, was shot and killed inside a residence in Alfredo V. Bonfil, a community near Cancún. The murder occurred on the afternoon of Friday, July 25, 2025, at the intersection of Vicente Guerrero and Álvaro Obregón streets.

Details of the Attack

According to preliminary reports, an assailant arrived on a motorcycle, dismounted, and fired multiple shots at Contreras Arteaga. Municipal police officers cordoned off the area after receiving reports of the incident. Paramedics confirmed the victim showed no signs of life upon arrival.

Agents from the Quintana Roo State Attorney General’s Office launched an investigation, while forensic personnel transported the body for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Rising Violence in Cancún

The murder underscores ongoing security concerns in Cancún and its surrounding areas. In a separate incident, residents of Supermanzana 107 lynched a suspected thief who attempted to steal a motorcycle.

Witnesses reported that the suspect was chased down by locals, tied to a post, and severely beaten before dying of asphyxiation. Municipal police and forensic teams later arrived to document the scene and remove the body. The identity of the deceased remains unknown.

Authorities have yet to disclose potential motives or suspects in Contreras Arteaga’s murder. The case adds to a growing list of violent crimes in the region, fueling public frustration over insecurity.
