Playa del Carmen, Mexico — The tourism sector and residents of Playa del Carmen were surprised this Thursday by an atypical phenomenon: the massive arrival of sargassum to the shores of Mamitas Beach. The arrival, which occurs months before the official start of the season, has raised alarms about what could be a critical year for the beaches of the Mexican Caribbean.

Cleanup Operation Targets 25 Tons of Seaweed

According to Samantha Álvarez, municipal secretary of the Environment and Climate Change, the debris is estimated to have reached 25 tons. Given the magnitude of the event, the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone activated an immediate cleanup protocol to protect the local ecosystem.

Key points of the cleanup operation include its progress, with 22.5 tons collected as of 5:00 p.m. this Thursday. The objective is complete removal, which is expected to be finished this Friday, provided that currents do not bring new landslides. The priority is to prevent the decomposition of the algae from affecting the coastal dune and the image of the destination.

Analyzing an Early Arrival

Although the sargassum season in Quintana Roo usually formally begins in April, the official explained that this event is a recurring but unusual phenomenon, driven mainly by changes in ocean currents.

However, for experts, this premature arrival is not an isolated incident. It is being analyzed as a possible indicator that the 2026 season could see significantly high activity, which would force authorities and hotel owners to reinforce their containment strategies and marine barriers sooner than expected.

Impact on Tourism and the Environment

These types of unscheduled events create uncertainty in tourism planning. Sargassum not only affects the aesthetics of the beaches, but its accumulation can cause impacts on mobility along the coastline, damage to biodiversity due to the loss of oxygen in the water near the shore, and economic impact resulting from extraordinary cleaning costs.
