Water Bills Spike in Isla Mujeres, Sparking Citizen Outrage

Residents of Isla Mujeres protesting excessive water bills

Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo — Social discontent has intensified in Isla Mujeres over alleged atypical charges on water bills and the lack of effective attention when requesting clarifications. Residents indicated that the situation has persisted since November and, far from being resolved, has repeated in different parts of the island.

According to collected testimonies, users who paid habitual amounts between 600 and 800 pesos began receiving invoices with disproportionate figures, some exceeding 20,000 and even 40,000 pesos. Those affected assure that there were no changes in their consumption that justify such increases.

When attempting to clarify the charges, the most frequent explanation, as they recount, has been the possible existence of internal leaks. However, they affirm that this response is offered without visible technical verification of the meter, without a clear breakdown of readings, and without a concrete route to correct the amounts when the supposed problem is not proven.

The dissatisfaction is not limited to the charges. Citizens also denounced uncordial treatment at the service module, as well as a lack of guidance to follow up on their cases. Faced with this, some sought support through other channels due to the absence of immediate solutions.

To this situation is added the recurring failure of the telephone service channel that the company offers for reports and complaints. Users indicated that the line does not always respond or presents interruptions, which makes it difficult to file reports and obtain follow-up.

Residents consulted demanded transparency in the readings, reliable technical reviews of the meters, adjustments when appropriate, and respectful treatment in public service. The demand, they agree, is direct: clear charges, dignified attention, and real solutions.
