Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Quintana Roo — A fire consumed three palapas at the Sijil Noh Há ecotourism center on Monday afternoon, causing material losses that could exceed 30,000 pesos, according to staff at the location and local authorities.
Preliminary reports indicate the blaze began shortly after 1:00 PM in the reception area and spread rapidly to a palapa used as a dining area and another nearby structure. The speed of the fire was attributed to the region's typical construction materials, which fed the flames despite efforts to contain them.
Furthermore, a mechanical failure in the Fire Department unit meant that workers and volunteers had to combat the fire using buckets of water, supporting their efforts with water drawn from a nearby lagoon. Municipal Police and volunteers from the National Emergency Commission ultimately participated in the relief efforts; however, the three palapas were left completely destroyed.
Local authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire.
