A two-year-old girl was recently rescued after being discovered alone on the streets of Cancún's Supermanzana 251 neighborhood. The Specialized Group in Attention to Domestic and Gender Violence (Geavig) found the child without any adult supervision. She was subsequently taken into the care of the Municipal Secretary of Public Security and Transit of Benito Juárez, where she underwent a clinical evaluation.
After proving her kinship, the girl's mother was able to pick her up from the municipal department. Despite the child being in good health and reunited with her mother, the Cancun DIF System will continue to monitor the situation.
It's important to note that this is not an isolated incident. There have been multiple reports of unsupervised children found wandering the streets. The most recent of these incidents took place on May 21, when a child was found alone in Region 236. This child had reportedly left his home while his mother was absent and began wandering around the nearby neighborhood.
In April, two children were placed under the protection of Cancun's DIF System after reports surfaced that they were being left home alone while their mother was at work, putting their safety at risk.
Sadly, the issue of children being left alone at home is a recurring problem, often due to the long working hours faced by parents or guardians. This problem is exacerbated by the lack of adequate child care support programs or available caregivers during the adults' absence.
