Playa del Carmen, Mexico — The Quintana Roo State Attorney General's Office (FGE) has reported the formal charging of two individuals identified as Roger Alberto "N" and Inocente "N" for the crime of extortion with threats. The charges follow their capture on October 1 in the Guadalupana neighborhood.
A Pattern of Coercion
According to a preliminary report from authorities, the two detained men allegedly visited businesses located on Xel-Há Avenue, where they demanded a monthly payment of 15,000 pesos from local vendors. This demand was made under the threat of violence, a practice commonly known as demanding "derecho de piso" or protection money.
Arrest and Judicial Proceedings
The events leading to the arrest began when one of the affected vendors immediately filed a report with emergency services. Following the report to 911, officers from the Solidaridad Municipal Police deployed an operation in the area, capturing both subjects in the act.
Subsequent to their apprehension, the suspects were formally charged with extortion. A judge has ordered them to be held under mandatory pre-trial detention for a period of two years while the investigation continues to build a stronger case.
Call for Public Vigilance
In conclusion, municipal authorities reiterated their call for citizens to report these types of crimes. The aim is to reduce such incidents within the community, as they represent a direct harm to local commercial activity and citizen security.
