Extortion Duo Jailed in Cancún Transport Case

Cancún — Two men identified as Jesús Alberto “N” and Juan Luis “N” have been formally charged and ordered to remain in preventative prison for two years. The decision follows their arrest in the act for their alleged involvement in a case of aggravated extortion targeting members of a transport union in Cancún.

According to the Quintana Roo State Attorney General's Office (FGE), the events occurred on September 9. The now-accused individuals allegedly burst into a subsidiary office of the "Lic. Luis Donaldo Colosio M, Leona Vicario" union, located in Supermanzana 70, where they assaulted one of the victims and demanded information about the union's vehicles and leaders.

Subsequently, the victims received phone calls demanding payments of 400 pesos per taxi and 500 pesos per van. The demands were accompanied by threats to shoot at and set fire to the vehicles if the payments were refused.

On September 16, during a meeting arranged for the handover of money in Supermanzana 63, one of the victims called for help. Police officers intervened, managing to detain the two subjects in the act.

Following the presentation of evidence by the Specialized Prosecutor's Office Combating Kidnapping and Extortion Crimes, a control judge determined their formal charging and imposed preventative prison as a precautionary measure for a period of two years while the corresponding trial proceeds.
