Two Men Arrested for Alleged Extortion of Taxi Drivers Near Cancun Bus Terminal

Police operation at Cancun's ADO bus terminal where two men were arrested for alleged extortion of taxi drivers

Cancun, Quintana Roo — Police arrested two men accused of extorting taxi drivers operating near the city’s main bus terminal.

State Prosecutor Raciel López Salazar announced the arrests, identifying the suspects as Israel “N,” known as “Anillo,” and Carlos “N,” alias “La Comadre.” They allegedly demanded daily payments of 200 pesos from about 26 drivers at a taxi stand near the ADO bus terminal in central Cancun.

Initial investigations indicate the money was required regularly to allow the drivers to work without retaliation.

The arrests followed a complaint filed by the taxi drivers themselves, which prompted authorities to launch an investigation and coordinate an operation involving the State Police’s Investigation Unit and Centurion Group. After their capture, police turned the suspects over to the State Prosecutor’s Office.

A judge ordered them held in preventive detention pending further legal proceedings. The prosecutor said an upcoming hearing will determine if there is sufficient evidence to formally charge them with extortion.
