Two Hotel Workers Killed Near Kohunlich; Third Survives Beating

Chetumal, Quintana Roo — A man and a woman who worked at a hotel near the Kohunlich archaeological zone were killed in an attack that state investigators are probing as a likely robbery, officials at the State Prosecutor’s Office confirmed.

A third employee was found hours later with severe injuries several kilometers away and remains hospitalized in Chetumal.

Workers left in hotel van, never returned

The three employees — identified as Misael, Liliana and Aquiles — left the property Sunday afternoon in a white express van owned by the hotel. When they failed to return at the expected time, worried colleagues went out to look for them, according to information gathered by investigators.

During the search, a person heading to the lagoon spotted the parked vehicle about four kilometers short of the destination. The discovery prompted a call to state investigators, who cordoned off the area.

Forensic experts and prosecutors went to the site where the van was found to collect evidence aimed at reconstructing what happened.

Third worker found beaten in Caobas

Aquiles, the third member of the group, was located later outside a food stand in the village of Caobas, in Othón P. Blanco municipality, close to the old customs post on the Caobas-Xpujil federal highway.

He showed signs of a severe beating and was given first aid before being taken to a hospital in Chetumal, where he is receiving medical treatment.

Investigation remains open

Authorities have not released the precise causes of death, which will be determined through forensic examinations. The bodies were taken to the facilities of the Forensic Medical Service for legal proceedings and formal identification before being released to their families.

One of the main lines of investigation points to a robbery, though officials have not ruled out other possible causes, and the case remains open. Investigators have also not determined whether anything was missing from the van or whether the workers were carrying valuables at the time.

Prosecutors expect Aquiles’ account, once his condition allows, to provide key details, including where the group was intercepted, how many attackers were involved and how he managed to reach Caobas, several kilometers from where the van was abandoned.

No arrests have been announced in the case.
