Tulum, Mexico — Aldo Ancona, a windsurfer based in Tulum, is preparing to take the next step in his athletic career by representing Mexico in European championships for the Windsurfer LT class, one of the most competitive categories in the sport internationally.

A Career Forged on the Waves

Born in Chetumal in 1975 to a family originally from Holbox, Ancona grew up in various parts of Quintana Roo, including Cozumel, Punta Allen, Felipe Carrillo Puerto, and Playa del Carmen. He discovered his passion for windsurfing at age 7 while on the shores of Cozumel. By 14, he had begun competing, securing first place in the Junior National category and first place overall in long-distance races, surpassing established athletes of the time such as Nilo Dzib and Raúl Dellile.

His early success led to participation in local, regional, and national regattas across Yucatán, Valle de Bravo, and Tampico. In 1991, he earned a spot on the Mexican national team for the Mistral World Championship, where he claimed third place in the youth division.

A Return to Competition

After a hiatus, Ancona returned to competitive windsurfing in 2023, inspired by his daughter. Since then, he has dominated the Quintana Roo state sailing circuit and other official regattas. His most recent achievement was a third-place finish in the lightweight One Design category at a competition in Progreso, Yucatán.

Currently, he represents the Puerto Aventuras Sailing Club, which boasts the second-largest fleet in Mexico and is the country’s sole Windsurfer LT fleet.

Overcoming Challenges

Much of Ancona’s early accolades were lost when Hurricane Wilma devastated Cozumel in 2005. Despite this setback, he remains focused on his goal: competing in the European Windsurfer LT championships, a critical stepping stone to the world championship.

However, funding remains a significant hurdle. "So far, I’ve covered my own expenses for state, regional, and national competitions," Ancona said. "But to compete internationally, I need support. Without it, achieving this will be very difficult."

A Call for Sponsorship

Ancona is now appealing to public institutions and private sponsors to help him reach the international stage, where he hopes to elevate the profile of Tulum, Quintana Roo, and Mexico in competitive windsurfing.

His journey reflects not only personal determination but also the potential for Mexican athletes to excel in niche water sports on a global scale.
