Tulum, Quintana Roo — A Tulum citizen avoided becoming a victim of telephone extortion thanks to the timely intervention of the Grupo Centurión. The incident occurred after the individual received messages from unknown persons demanding 400,000 pesos for the supposed release of his partner and her children, who were traveling from Chiapas to Quintana Roo.

Intervention Prevents Financial Loss

The affected individual requested support through the Anonymous Tip Line 089 after receiving the threats. Officers from the Grupo Centurión responded immediately and explained to him that it was a case of "virtual kidnapping," a scheme in which criminals intimidate and pressure victims to obtain deposits through deception.

Thanks to the guidance from the officers, the citizen did not make the deposit. Minutes later, he managed to communicate with his partner, who confirmed that she and her children were safe, ruling out any deprivation of liberty.

Authorities Warn of Prevalent Scam

Authorities indicated that this type of telephone extortion is becoming increasingly frequent in the region, where criminals obtain personal data through social media or leaked databases. They reiterated the call for the public to remain calm, not to provide sensitive information, not to make deposits, and to immediately report any suspicious calls to the numbers 089 or 911.
