Tensions in the northern part of the state escalated on Sunday night following a direct armed assault on the State Attorney General's Office (FGE) in Tulum. Gunmen fired multiple rounds at the building before fleeing the scene without being apprehended.
The incident occurred around 8 p.m., when unidentified individuals approached the Prosecutor's Office and fired at least 20 rounds from high-powered weapons. This happened despite the presence of bystanders in the vicinity. Witnesses reported that upon hearing the initial gunfire, those nearby quickly sought shelter to avoid being struck by bullets. Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported among the personnel present at the site.
This brazen attack on the Prosecutor's Office comes in the midst of a surge in violence in northern Quintana Roo, where rival criminal groups are battling for territorial control. In response to the attack, authorities initiated a security operation to track down the culprits, but no arrests have been made to date. Municipal Police, the National Guard, and the Prosecutor's Office secured the area for the collection of ballistic evidence.
The incident underscores growing concerns about the audacity of criminal groups in the region. These groups are not only targeting their rivals but are also openly challenging security institutions. The authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the motive behind the attack or any progress in identifying the culprits. More information about the incident is expected to be released in the coming hours as investigations continue. It remains to be seen whether this attack is linked to any ongoing case within the Prosecutor's Office or is part of the recent surge in violence in the state.
