Tulum, Mexico — The Secretary of Tourism of the Government of Mexico, Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, reported that from January to September 2025, archaeological sites and museums in the country collectively recorded 15.9 million visitors; of that total, Tulum received 809,000 visitors, placing this destination in third place in the national ranking.

She detailed that the sites with the highest number of visitors during the first nine months of the year were Chichén Itzá, with 1.7 million; Teotihuacán and its Site Museum, which received 1.2 million; and Tulum, which recorded 809,000 visitors.

The Secretary of Tourism specified that during the first nine months of 2025, archaeological sites received 7.4 million visitors, of which 64 percent were national and 36 percent foreign, with an increase of 2.6 percent compared to the same period in 2024.

She added that, in that same period, the country’s museums recorded 8.5 million visitors, with a predominantly national composition, 89 percent, and 11 percent foreign visitors.

“We will continue to promote coordinated actions with communities, INAH (National Institute of Anthropology and History), local governments, and the tourism sector to ensure the conservation of heritage, improve visitor management, and strengthen community projects, ensuring that the growth of cultural tourism benefits families and the territories where it develops,” Rodríguez Zamora added.

Regarding the museums that concentrated the highest influx between January and September 2025, these were the National Museum of Anthropology, with 43 percent of the total; the National Museum of History, with 24 percent; and the Templo Mayor Museum, with 4 percent.

“The greater arrival of visitors directly strengthens community tourism, as it generates new opportunities for local guides, artisans, traditional cooks, cooperatives, and cultural enterprises around the country’s archaeological sites and museums,” she concluded.
