Tulum’s Hotel Gap: 25% Downtown vs 77% Akumal

TULUM — The downtown area of Tulum is experiencing one of its lowest hotel occupancy rates of the vacation season at just 25.3%, while in contrast, Akumal and Chemuyil reported 77%, positioning themselves as the areas with the best tourism performance. The destination's overall average stands at 60%, according to the most recent report from the Municipal Tourism Directorate based on data from service providers.

A breakdown of the data shows Tulum National Park registered 51.8% occupancy, the hotel zone reached 39.1%, and Tankah was at 35.3%. The report also indicates a cumulative rate of 63.9% for the all-inclusive scheme and 49.4% for the European plan.

While presenting the figures at the weekly press conference, the Director General of Tourism, Carla Patricia Andrade Piedras, explained that although the North American market continues to be the primary source of visitors, this summer has seen growth in the arrival of European tourists, particularly from France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, as well as visitors from less common countries such as Scotland.

Another relevant data point is that visitors are staying an average of eight nights in the destination, which represents a direct economic impact on complementary services like restaurants, transportation, tours, and cultural activities.

Finally, Andrade Piedras highlighted that the Tourism Directorate is working in conjunction with the state Secretary of Tourism and other municipal departments to create a calendar of cultural and recreational activities to diversify the tourism offering. The purpose, she stated, is to strengthen Tulum's competitiveness in the international market and, at the same time, consolidate a model of sustainable tourism that generates tangible benefits for the local community.
