Tulum, Quintana Roo — The municipality of Tulum has taken a significant step toward improving its sports infrastructure with the signing of a key agreement to strengthen spaces dedicated to sports and community activities. The deal, formalized under the federal “Social World Cup” project in preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, includes the construction of two new sports courts that will contribute to the community’s comprehensive development.
The event, held on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, was led by Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama, who emphasized the importance of sports as a tool for building peace and social inclusion. In her remarks, the governor stated: “We believe in sports as a path to peace and inclusion; we work so that girls, boys, and young people grow up healthily, away from violence, building a better Quintana Roo for everyone.”
Tulum Mayor Diego Castañón Trejo actively participated in signing the Framework Coordination Agreement for the Intervention and Modernization of Community Sports Infrastructure. In his speech, Castañón Trejo highlighted the project’s importance for the municipality, saying: “We are very happy to be part of this agreement that will give us two new courts, which will undoubtedly enrich our sports spaces and community centers, thus strengthening our social fabric.”
The agreement’s objective is to improve and rehabilitate community sports facilities, allowing Tulum to make notable progress in strengthening infrastructure for both sports and healthy community interaction. The new courts will not only expand options for practicing various sports but will also serve as key spaces for children and youth development, promoting healthy habits and social cohesion.
This effort exemplifies cooperation between all three levels of government, ensuring the execution of projects that positively impact Tulum families. Castañón Trejo noted that such initiatives will also strengthen social bonds and create a more prosperous future for all Tulum residents.
