Tulum, Mexico — While families in various cities across the country face increases in tortilla prices, this basic food item will remain stable in Tulum for at least the next two years. This was confirmed by Gabriel Denis Yam Novelo, president of the Association of Tortilla Makers and Millers of the municipality, who stated that there is no official notification anticipating any adjustment in the short term.
The leader explained that neither suppliers nor authorities have issued notices of price increases, so both tortillas and masa will maintain their current prices for the remainder of 2025 and even during 2026. “For the moment we have no information about an increase; the price will remain until further notice. Perhaps there will be some adjustment for 2026, but they will be informed,” he said.
Currently, a kilogram of tortillas sells for between 28 and 30 pesos, while half a kilogram costs around 14 pesos. As for masa, its cost remains stable at 20 pesos per kilogram. According to Yam Novelo, the absence of significant variations in the costs of flour mills and other supplies has allowed these rates to be sustained without passing increases on to consumers. “We are at a stable price,” he reiterated.
The sector representative also emphasized a significant change in the local market. In the last five years, the number of tortilla shops in Tulum has practically doubled: from seven to more than fifteen establishments. This growth, he said, responds to population increase and high demand for an indispensable product in the daily diet.
Despite the sector’s expansion, Yam Novelo assured that businesses’ priority is to maintain accessible prices while conditions allow. He considered that this stability represents relief for families, who will not face increases in one of the essential products of the basic food basket in the short term.
“We strive to take care of our customers’ pockets,” he concluded, reiterating that any future changes will be announced in advance.
