Three Men Sentenced to 70 Years for Aggravated Kidnapping in Cancún

Cancún, Quintana Roo — The State Prosecutor’s Office of Quintana Roo has secured a 70-year prison sentence for three men convicted of the aggravated kidnapping of a man in the municipality of Benito Juárez, home of Cancún, in November 2023.

The convicted men are José Alfredo Gómez Trinidad, Edgar Fernando Andrade González, and Denis Ángel Rodríguez Galván. The sentence was announced by Southern District Prosecutor Estela Labastida Rodríguez, on behalf of State Attorney General Raciel López Salazar, during a press conference of Quintana Roo’s Peace Cabinet.

According to prosecutors, on Nov. 14, 2023, Rodríguez Galván and Andrade González, members of a criminal group, drove to a mechanic’s shop in the Las Islas residential complex in Supermanzana 216 of Cancún. They intercepted the victim as he was heading to his vehicle and, armed with firearms, forced him into his own car before taking him to a safe house.

During the abduction and captivity, the kidnappers demanded 5 million pesos for his release, threatening to kill him if the money was not paid. After the 400,000-peso ransom was paid, the victim was released on Nov. 15, 2023, near Plaza Héroes.

Following an oral trial in which prosecutors presented evidence, a judge found all three defendants criminally responsible and imposed the 70-year sentence.

The press conference was also attended by Government Secretary Cristina Torres Gómez, Citizen Security Secretary Rear Admiral Julio César Gómez Torres, and representatives from the Mexican Army, the National Guard and the 11th Naval Zone.
