Tulum, Quintana Roo — Three hotel workers died when the bus taking them to work overturned on Federal Highway 307 near the entrance to Tulum International Airport on Wednesday morning, October 7. The crash has raised questions about the safety of the long journeys many Riviera Maya employees make before their shifts begin.
The bus was carrying employees from communities in the Felipe Carrillo Puerto area, including Señor, to the Grand Sirenis Riviera Maya resort. It left the highway and overturned among the vegetation. Emergency crews treated injured passengers at the scene and transported others to hospitals.
Reports of the number injured have varied, and authorities have not released a definitive toll or a full account of their conditions. Three workers were reported dead at the scene.
Investigators have yet to determine why the bus left the road. An early account suggested the driver may have fallen asleep, but that has not been established. His whereabouts after the crash have also been the subject of conflicting reports. The State Prosecutor’s Office is investigating.
Staff Transport Safety Back in Focus
For employees who live in communities far from the Riviera Maya’s hotels, a bus ride before dawn is part of the working day. Wednesday’s crash has brought fresh attention to how those vehicles and their drivers are supervised.
In August, companies that transport hotel and tourism staff proposed a statewide penalty point system for drivers with repeated traffic violations or accidents. The proposal was intended to make a driver’s record visible when they move between employers. It has not been established that any prior violation played a role in this crash.
Quintana Roo’s Mobility Institute requires a current insurance policy as part of the permit documentation for vehicles providing private employee transport. Investigators will need to establish the condition of this bus, the circumstances of its journey and the cause of the rollover. For the families of those killed and injured, those findings cannot come soon enough.
