Police Shoot and Wound Man in Playa del Carmen’s Misión de las Flores

Police officers near the scene where a man was shot and wounded during a chase in Misión de las Flores, Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A man was shot and wounded in the shoulder after he allegedly attacked pursuing police officers with a machete in the Misión de las Flores neighborhood, rekindling questions about public security in this Caribbean resort city.

The confrontation unfolded at the intersection of Lilis and Constituyentes avenues. According to initial reports, officers were chasing the man, who refused to stop despite being ordered to halt.

Man Allegedly Lunged at Officers With a Machete

When the pursuit reached the intersection, the man allegedly rushed at the officers with a machete, prompting them to open fire. One of the rounds struck him in the shoulder.

Investigators recovered five spent shell casings at the scene. The wounded man was taken to a hospital for treatment, and authorities did not disclose his condition.

Early accounts suggested the man may have been carrying a firearm and tried to shoot at the officers, but it later emerged that the object he allegedly used to attack them was a machete.

Security Strategy Under Fire

The shooting comes amid growing criticism of the security policies of the municipal administration led by Mayor Estefanía Mercado. Residents across several parts of Playa del Carmen say violent incidents continue and that authorities have not delivered enough results to bring insecurity under control.

The case also highlights the risks officers face during interventions, and what critics describe as the need for the city to strengthen prevention, surveillance and rapid response before confrontations turn into shootings.

Authorities must now clarify the circumstances of the confrontation, determine responsibility and establish whether the police response followed established protocols.
