Cancún, MX — A major security operation was deployed on Wednesday afternoon at the Cancún Center for Social Reintegration (Cereso), causing tension among residents of the Supermanzana 99 neighborhood. The operation began when patrol vehicles carrying dozens of officers from the State Citizen Security Secretariat (SSC), the National Guard, and the National Defense Secretariat arrived at the facility with sirens activated and long guns ready for entry into the prison.

The inspection inside the jail is being carried out under the coordination of Rear Admiral Julio César Gómez Torres, the head of the SSC, who arrived at the prison personally to supervise the actions. Witnesses who observed the arrival of the inter-institutional force stated that the official gave direct instructions to a group of state police officers before entering the interior of the penitentiary center, while the uniformed officers remained lined up awaiting further orders.

No incidents have been reported so far, though preliminary accounts indicate the mobilization originated from a cell inspection as part of routine control measures, without ruling out that it was in response to reports of fights or attempted escapes.

In a statement, the State Citizen Security Secretariat reported that the operation's objective is to strengthen internal discipline and guarantee the safety of both the inmates and the prison staff. The agency reiterated that these actions are carried out in strict adherence to human rights and are part of a permanent program to maintain order in the state's penitentiary centers.

The heavily armed uniformed officers continue to monitor the area from several blocks before reaching the prison.
