Man found dead in Playa del Carmen amid conflicting reports

Police officers securing the crime scene where a man was found dead in Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A homeless man, allegedly a member of a death squad, died from a gunshot on the rooftop of a tenement building in the Ejidal neighborhood of Playa del Carmen. However, another version from witnesses indicates that alleged hitmen on a motorcycle killed the man and then fled.

The authorities from the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) implemented an operation to track down the perpetrators, but without success.

The events occurred on 28th Street between 120th and 125th Avenues. There are two versions: one speaks of a member of a death squad who died by suicide from a gunshot for unknown reasons. The SSC of Playa del Carmen issued a statement informing that the man died by suicide, without specifying the caliber of the firearm.

However, another version circulating is that neighbors heard at least between 5 and 7 gunshots, which caused panic. “Could he have died by suicide from five shots?” question neighbors who heard the detonations of a firearm.

Witness versions indicate that upon hearing the shots, they reported it to the emergency number 911 to request support and assist the injured person. However, paramedics, after examining the man, confirmed he had no vital signs.

The zone was cordoned off by police, who informed the Quintana Roo Attorney General’s Office of the events, while police deployed a search operation for the alleged hired hitmen.

Minutes later, forensic experts from the Attorney General’s Office arrived to carry out the corresponding procedures and order the removal of the lifeless body of the man.
