Starbucks’ New Playa del Carmen Flagship Store Opens

Playa del Carmen, Mexico — Starbucks has officially inaugurated its new flagship store on Playa del Carmen’s iconic Quinta Avenida, marking one of the brand’s most distinctive locations in Mexico. The store, part of the Playa Básico concept, represents an investment exceeding $1 million.

A Design Rooted in Local Identity

Spanning nearly 400 square meters, the store was designed to visually and culturally integrate with its surroundings, incorporating materials and artistic interventions by local creators.

“This store was conceived to resonate with the community, reflecting the essence of Playa del Carmen,” said Francisco Tosso, General Director of Starbucks Alsea, during the opening ceremony in an exclusive interview with InZoom.mx.

Part of a Regional Expansion Strategy

The launch aligns with Starbucks’ ongoing expansion plans in Mexico and Latin America. While the exact number of new stores opened this year was not disclosed, Tosso confirmed that the company has achieved 30% to 40% of its annual target, with a goal of increasing its portfolio by 6% in 2025.

“We will continue investing in Mexico. This store demonstrates how important this market is for the brand,” Tosso added.

A ‘Third Place’ for Tourists and Residents

The new location complements the four existing Starbucks stores in Playa del Carmen, catering specifically to the hotel zone and tourists staying in apartments or residential complexes. The design emphasizes comfortable in-store seating and delivery services.

A key concept behind the store is the “third place”—a space distinct from home and work, ideal for studying, socializing, or relaxation.

“No business guarantees absolute success, but we believe in the emotional connection the brand has with Mexico, especially in the Mexican Caribbean. This store reflects that commitment,” Tosso stated.

Strengthening Presence in Key Southeast Destinations

With this opening, Starbucks reinforces its footprint in high-profile tourist destinations such as Playa del Carmen, Cancún, Tulum, and Mérida, tailoring each location to its unique surroundings.
