The Art Gallery in Solidaridad celebrated its first anniversary with a collective exhibition titled "Twists in Art". This event highlighted the diverse range of artists within the community. The municipal government, under the leadership of President Lili Campos, has used this space to promote local art, making it the most prominent gallery in the state for the number of artists and works showcased.
Francisco Reyes Marroquín, the General Director of the Municipal Institute of Culture and the Arts (IMCAS), noted that the exhibition not only marks the gallery's first anniversary, but also coincides with the 31st Anniversary of the municipality's establishment. He emphasized that the gallery is a testament to the enduring talent found in Playa del Carmen.
Sandra Serrano, the Gallery Director, highlighted the gallery's achievements since its opening. It has hosted nine collective exhibitions, displaying the works of 298 artists and a total of 599 pieces. The gallery has also provided 12 free workshops, courses, and trainings, attracting nearly six thousand visitors. Additionally, it has organized 24 guided tours for schools and community groups, solidifying its role in promoting and democratizing art in Solidaridad.
The exhibitions have covered a wide range of disciplines, including drawing, painting, sculpture, installation, video art, object art, collage, performance, and even an alternative fashion parade. The gallery has also offered free trainings, workshops, conferences, and courses. Six digital exhibition catalogs have been published, contributing to the municipality's artistic heritage. Furthermore, the gallery has launched its first art collection featuring works from local artists.
Serrano concluded by noting that the current exhibition showcases a variety of stylistic twists, ranging from traditional vanitas with its rich historical and symbolic significance, to contemporary installation forms. Each piece serves as a testament to artistic evolution and the artists' ability to challenge conventions, creating new expressions that provoke thought and connect with reality, imagination, and life itself.
