Cobá Arrest Turns Violent: Officer Injured, Shots Fired

TULUM — An arrest in the community of Cobá resulted in two gunshots and one police officer injured, according to preliminary information. The incident occurred when relatives of the detainee allegedly assaulted an officer from the municipal tactical unit during the intervention.

Initial reports indicate that David Jonathan "N", 26, was arrested around 12:50 p.m. on the Nuevo Durango–Cobá highway, in front of a blue house. The operation involved members of the Investigative Police and the Tulum Municipal Police.

According to the initial report, the man was found in possession of a firearm, a magazine, and one live .380 caliber round, as well as 42 small bags containing a dried herb resembling marijuana. The substance will be analyzed to confirm its nature. The detainee will be turned over to the Public Prosecutor's Office for his alleged involvement in drug-related offenses.

During the intervention, approximately five people, preliminarily identified as relatives of the detainee, allegedly attacked a municipal police officer with sticks and stones. According to the police version, other officers fired two shots into the air to get them to release their colleague and stop the attack.

The individual sustained an injury to the upper part of his right shoulder and was transported for medical evaluation. The report states that the corresponding certificate was issued to document the injury.

The information available is preliminary and corresponds to the police version of events. Authorities have yet to release further details regarding the circumstances of the arrest, the reported assault, and the detonations that occurred during the operation.
