José María Morelos, Mexico — The growing shortage of disposable cups and straws in stores in José María Morelos is putting dozens of families at risk of losing their source of income, particularly those who depend on selling shaved ice, beverages, and prepared foods.

Álvaro Uc Cáceres, a shaved ice vendor, reported that various establishments in the municipality have informed him they will no longer be supplying cups or straws, essential supplies to continue his daily activity.

The merchant warned that without these materials his work becomes impossible, which could force him to suspend his sales, affecting not only his family but also many other street vendors and merchants in the municipal market.

“Without cups or straws there is no sale, and without sale there is no income,” he expressed, noting that asking customers to bring containers from home is not a realistic option for most people.

The situation also impacts vendors of atole, rice, beverages, and other products, who use these items as a basic part of their service. If the shortage continues, they warned, dozens of families could be left without their primary source of income.

Given this outlook, the merchant made an urgent call to authorities and legislators to analyze the social impact of this measure and propose immediate solutions.

He added that the total removal of these products is causing an economic and social problem in the municipality.
