Yucalpetén, Yucatán — The Mexican Navy, through the Ninth Naval Zone, announced the arrival of the vessel Sharkwater near Progreso, Yucatán, on Saturday. The ship’s deployment is part of a collaborative initiative to conduct surveillance, monitoring, and public awareness campaigns aimed at preserving marine biodiversity and protecting vital ecosystems.

Strengthening Marine Protection Efforts

The operation stems from an agreement signed in February between the Mexican Navy (SEMAR) and the non-governmental organization Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. The partnership focuses on joint actions in Mexican maritime zones to safeguard marine environments and monitor protected natural areas, particularly the Alacranes Reef and the region known as Bajos del Norte.

"This collaboration reinforces our shared commitment to protecting marine ecosystems, especially in the natural reserves of northern Yucatán," stated the Navy in an official release.

The Sharkwater’s mission underscores SEMAR’s dedication to environmental conservation and the enforcement of surveillance in ecologically sensitive zones. The Navy emphasized its ongoing efforts to strengthen oversight in priority marine areas while working alongside local authorities and communities.
