Highway Crash in Cancún Area Leads to Oil Spill Cleanup

Damaged Nissan Tiida vehicle with front-end damage and oil spill on Puerto Morelos-Cancún highway

Cancún, Quintana Roo — A serious accident was reported on Tuesday afternoon on the Puerto Morelos-Cancún highway, where a car collided with the rear of another vehicle near the Royaltón hotel, with no injuries reported.

Cancún Fire Department personnel responded to the scene to provide assistance and performed work to cover spilled oil on the asphalt with powder, resulting from damage to the engine of a Nissan Tiida vehicle.

Firefighters received a report of a vehicle accident with fuel spillage near the Royaltón hotel, in the direction from Puerto Morelos to Cancún. The incident generated considerable traffic, causing long lines of vehicles as circulation was only possible in the left lane.

Initial reports indicated that the driver of the Tiida did not maintain a safe distance and rear-ended another vehicle, causing oil to spill from the engine damaged by the impact.

Firefighters confirmed there was oil spillage on the pavement, which created a risk for vehicle circulation.

In response, personnel proceeded to cover an area approximately four meters long by three meters wide in the right lane of the highway with sand. This controlled the danger of vehicles slipping when passing through this area after the removal of the damaged car.

Elements of the National Guard Highway Division took charge of the corresponding procedures and the removal of the vehicle with a tow truck to clear circulation.

It should be noted that this section of the highway has recorded constant accidents due to continuous vehicle traffic from tourist activity in the Riviera Maya.

One such incident occurred on October 16, when a tourist transport bus lost control and collided with a cargo truck, then left the asphalt pavement where it knocked down a Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) pole.

Some witnesses mentioned that one of the bus’s front tires burst, causing the driver to lose control to the right, impacting the left front side of a cargo truck.
