Tulum, Mexico — Various beaches in the municipality of Tulum present favorable conditions for the enjoyment of residents and visitors, with areas that remain free of sargassum and with good sand conditions, despite the intermittent presence of the macroalgae in other stretches of the coastline.
Among the points that record the best conditions are Punta Piedra and the new public access known as the “Playa del Pueblo,” where the sea appears clean and the arrival of sargassum is minimal, allowing recreational activities and access without setbacks.
According to reports observed in the coastal zone, the influx of sargassum has occurred in an atypical and constant manner in some sectors; however, its behavior has been irregular, which has allowed for areas completely clear of the macroalgae throughout the day.
Cleaning brigades carry out daily tasks at different points along the coastal strip to remove sargassum that reaches the shore, with the objective of maintaining optimal conditions for public access and areas of higher tourist influx. These actions seek to reduce the visual and environmental impact of the algae, as well as facilitate the use of the beaches.
Specialists have indicated that the behavior of sargassum is variable and depends on natural factors such as wind direction, ocean currents, and tides, which causes the macroalgae to concentrate in certain points while others remain clean.
Given this situation, authorities recommend that those planning to visit the beaches of Tulum consult beforehand the state of the coastal zones, as conditions can change throughout the day. The variability of the phenomenon allows, nevertheless, for the destination to maintain spaces suitable for the enjoyment of both the local population and tourism.
