The Ministry of Public Education (SEP) announced that, as part of the strategy for strengthening Higher Education and the creation of new universities being built in the country, the goal of 55% coverage and the expansion of the national enrollment by 353,000 students in various public institutions will be achieved.
Through a statement, it explained that an increase of at least 17% in enrollment compared to the current one is contemplated, with the purpose of attending to the growing student population and ensuring that higher education is accessible to a greater number of young people.
In this sense, it detailed that, to achieve this increase, State Universities, State Universities with Solidarity Support, and Intercultural Universities will offer 150,000 new places; while Federal Universities, including the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), National Polytechnic Institute (IPN), National Pedagogical University (UPN), and Metropolitan Autonomous University (UAM), will contribute 40,000 spaces.
For its part, the Open and Distance University of Mexico (UnADM) will add 50,000 new spaces; Public Normal Schools have a goal of 30,000 new places; and Technological and Polytechnic Universities (UTP) will contribute 83,000 places, to reach the total expansion of 353,000 students.
In addition, it added that, combined with the public offer, private institutions are expected to collaborate in this national effort with 400,000 new places to attend to the educational demand.
