Puerto Aventuras, Quintana Roo — The second “Explorers of Rights” forum, organized by the third regiduría under Matilde Carrillo Véjar, took place in the Los Sauces community of Puerto Aventuras, engaging local children and adolescents. The event aimed to equip minors with tools to recognize themselves as rights-bearing individuals and advocate for their recognition and comprehensive protection.
Empowering Youth Through Education
Carrillo Véjar, who oversees the Youth Commission, emphasized the forum’s purpose in fostering awareness of children’s rights. Citing data from INEGI’s latest population and housing census, she noted that 20% of Playa del Carmen’s population consists of children aged 0 to 11, while adolescents aged 12 to 17 account for 8.3%.
The forum, held at the Los Sauces Community Center, included participation from Yamile Domínguez Álvarez, executive secretary of the National System for the Protection of Children and Adolescents, and representatives from the civil association Save the Children. Carrillo Véjar stressed the importance of listening to minors, whose perspectives are vital for the municipality’s transformation. Discussions focused on rights in government, school, public spaces, and households, empowering attendees to demand their full recognition and enforcement.
