Tulum, Quintana Roo — Three screwworm cases have been identified in animals in Tulum — two dogs and a horse — veterinarian Francisco Barrios Gómez reported. The specialist said the known cases do not yet indicate a widespread outbreak in the municipality.
Barrios Gómez said the horse was found several months ago during an operation to rescue equines. That intervention turned up injuries linked to screwworm, and the same problem was later identified in two dogs.
The veterinarian said the available information does not point to an epidemic or a public health emergency in Tulum. He nonetheless called for continued monitoring and prompt treatment of injuries in animals.
He advised owners and caregivers to check wounds and consult a veterinarian at any sign of infection. Early care, he said, is essential to keep the condition from progressing, even though the number of cases detected in the municipality remains low.
