Cancún, Mexico — What began as a humble prayer space has evolved into a focal point for religious, artistic, and tourist interest: the Sanctuary of Mary Undoer of Knots, founded by Father Luis Pablo Garza, has recently served as the backdrop for major international film productions.

A Hub for Cinematic Storytelling

During an interview, the priest revealed that three audiovisual projects inspired by the Marian devotion are currently in development. One is a feature film titled Undoer of Knots, produced under the auspices of the Catholic World Festival. Filming has concluded, and the project is now in post-production, with a planned release early next year.

Additionally, an international documentary recently wrapped production under the direction of French filmmaker Vincent Motes and co-director Lucía González, founder of Madrid-based distributor Bosco Films. The crew, including cinematographer Javier Martínez, spent 15 days in Cancún capturing the sanctuary’s essence—its landscapes, architecture, and testimonials from devotees and visitors.

Global Spotlight on Spiritual Tourism

“We never imagined the sanctuary would attract the attention of the film world. It’s a blessing. This documentary aims to showcase the spiritual and natural beauty of this place,” Father Garza told Radio Fórmula, visibly moved.

The documentary features interviews with local bishops, community figures, and visitors such as Argentine actress and model Sabrina Bronzoni. Slated for release on December 8, the feast day of the Virgin Mary, the film includes footage shot at the sanctuary and along the Mexican Caribbean coast, with support from state and local tourism authorities.

The rise of “film tourism”—travelers visiting locations featured in movies or series—has presented an opportunity for the sanctuary to expand its reach. The Cancún Turibús has already added the site as an official stop, significantly boosting visitor numbers.

A Sanctuary of Peace and Pilgrimage

Currently, the Sanctuary of Mary Undoer of Knots welcomes an average of 24,800 visitors weekly, with Sundays seeing the highest foot traffic. Up to 17 buses carrying pilgrims from across the Yucatán Peninsula arrive on peak days.

“This is a place where you can feel peace. First-time visitors often say they’ll return with loved ones. It touches the heart,” Father Garza added.

In recognition of its spiritual and touristic impact, the local government approved renaming its address from Avenida 145 to “Avenida Santuario” (Sanctuary Avenue) to improve accessibility. Urban signage will soon be installed to guide visitors.

Expanding Cultural Influence

Another Mexican production team is finalizing a script for a film set at the sanctuary, further cementing its cultural relevance. Father Garza also shared his recent experience at the Vatican, where he witnessed the election of Pope Leo and had a chance encounter with his brother. He emphasized that this new chapter for the Church aligns with the sanctuary’s values of openness and dialogue.

“Mary’s home is for everyone. No matter your religion, personal history, or beliefs—here, you can find peace,” the founder affirmed.

The sanctuary’s growing prominence underscores its dual role as a spiritual haven and a cinematic landmark, bridging faith and culture in Mexico’s Caribbean region.
