Emergency personnel and residents at the scene of a rescue in Chiquilá, Quintana Roo

Chiquilá, Quintana Roo — Residents rescued a girl from an attempted assault on Thursday afternoon after a man on a motorcycle abducted her and took her into a wooded area.

According to witness accounts, three children were walking home after running errands when a man on a motorcycle intercepted them, grabbed the oldest girl, and took her into nearby vegetation.

The children’s screams alerted neighbors, who entered the wooded area with machetes and managed to detain the suspect. The girl suffered scratches on her arms but showed no signs of sexual assault.

Chiquilá Mayor Jairo Nain Pérez Coral confirmed residents detained the suspect, who was then handed over to municipal police. The victim’s mother has filed a complaint with the State Prosecutor’s Office.

Valero Domínguez Mayoral expressed widespread concern in the port community, writing on Facebook: “Anger in our town of Chiquilá. A person tried to assault a girl who was taken from his hands when he was dragging her toward the woods. The girl was left with scratches on her arms. People are angry with machetes in hand. Thanks to neighbors who saw when he was taking the girl and managed to take her away.”
