Quintana Roo — The harvest road program not only advances toward the goal of building 100 kilometers by 2026 (double that of 2025) but is backed by a historic investment of 157 million pesos for the agricultural sector in the southern part of the state, aiming to transform Quintana Roo’s primary sector.
The investment in roads is crucial for farmers to transport their harvests, an action that directly benefits between 1,000 and 1,200 producers.
The program’s launch phase in 2025 included improvements to 51 kilometers, distributed across 17 roads in 14 localities across five municipalities in the state.
According to Jorge Aguilar Osorio, head of the Secretariat of Agricultural, Rural, and Fisheries Development (Sedarpe), the program is advancing “significantly,” with the goal of doubling the kilometer target for next year.
What Does the Harvest Road Program Entail?
Currently, the program focuses on two strategic zones in the state, where work is underway to rehabilitate 22 roads in the municipality of Felipe Carrillo Puerto and 17 more that will begin in Bacalar.
The head of Sedarpe stated that this effort in 2025 is not just “rehabilitating 51 kilometers, it’s opening the way for the future of their families and recognizing the dignity of the work done with their hands.”
He added that the harvest road infrastructure aims to combat the low development of the primary sector in Quintana Roo and ensure that production reaches markets in a timely manner.
Regarding corn, these roads are crucial for transporting production from the so-called “Granary of the State” in the municipality of José María Morelos and preventing harvest losses.
Historically, sugarcane producers have had to fund the repair of these roads themselves to transport their product to the sugar mill, so the state investment seeks to alleviate this burden, facilitating transportation to processing centers and improving the economy of sugarcane families in the state.
