Cancún, Mexico — As part of the promotional strategy for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, several destinations in Quintana Roo will have specific zones for fans of the sporting event, with activities and screenings of the matches.

This was announced by Bernardo Cueto Riestra, the state Secretary of Tourism, who detailed that World Cup packages are already on sale, allowing fans from Europe or South America to stay in the Mexican Caribbean with flight tickets and entry to the matches that interest them, taking advantage of the fact that Cancún Airport is the only one in the world with daily connectivity to the 16 host cities of the World Cup.

Cancún International Airport is the only one in Mexico, outside of those in the three World Cup host cities, where the protocol for attending to World Cup fans will also be applied, as it is the entry point for many due to this connectivity.

Data from the federal Ministry of Tourism indicate that the World Cup will bring 5.5 million visitors to Mexico, with an economic spillover of one billion dollars.

Quintana Roo is already preparing a promotional campaign to ensure that many of these fans choose to stay in the Mexican Caribbean between matches.

In an interview, Bernardo Cueto stated that, although Uruguay has already confirmed that its national team will stay in Playa del Carmen, caution is needed with this information, as it is FIFA who will announce the operational bases of each national team. “Monday is when FIFA will inform where they will stay, because several national teams can choose the same location, which is when there are adjustments,” he detailed.

Quintana Roo will host in its two hotels that will serve as bases (Moon Palace in Cancún and Mayakoba in Playa del Carmen) not only the national teams and their staff, but also members of the press from those countries, which will allow the promotion of the destination.

FITUR and Tulum

Questioned about Quintana Roo’s participation in the International Tourism Fair (Fitur) in Madrid, the Secretary of Tourism indicated that they will have a busy agenda, with meetings with tour operators, airlines, and investors, in addition to bringing 70 exhibitors for the pavilion.

The event will serve to launch new promotional campaigns, without ruling out the possibility of announcing new air routes, depending on the agreements reached.

Regarding the possible impact on Tulum’s image due to the homicide that occurred next to an electronic music festival, the state official assured that similar events occur all over the world and, although they cannot “cover the sun with a finger,” they must work to maintain security. “In the case of Quintana Roo, what the agencies tell us is that the perception of security has improved a lot,” he defended.

Tulum, in addition, will host an air show that will put the destination in the spotlight of many aviation fans, he added.
