Quintana Roo, Mexico — The Legislative Power of Quintana Roo is evaluating an initiative that would facilitate the forgiveness of debts for potable water service. The proposal seeks to grant the Comisión de Agua Potable y Alcantarillado (CAPA) greater legal authority to offer regularization programs, including discounts and renegotiated payment plans.

An Initiative for Financial and Social Relief

This measure aims to help thousands of users who, for years, have maintained debts with the organization, some for more than two decades. Currently, CAPA lacks the authority to forgive late fees or implement strategies to recover resources from expired portfolios, which has generated financial problems for the institution.

The possibility of approving these reforms represents an opportunity to stabilize CAPA's finances and improve the relationship with users, who could access better payment schemes and re-enter the water system. The initiative is under analysis and is expected to be submitted for discussion in the coming weeks, in favor of more efficient management of the water resource in the region.

The importance of this proposal lies in strengthening the efficiency of public services and promoting greater social inclusion through the regularization of pending payments, contributing to sustainable development in Quintana Roo.
