Quintana Roo Tops National Statistics

Quintana Roo, Mexico — With 132 cases, Quintana Roo occupies first place nationally in women victims of human trafficking and in the rate of culpable homicide per 100,000 women, according to the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP). Additionally, according to the most recent report on Violence Against Women from the SESNSP, Cancún is among the seven cities with the most femicides.

These figures were released in the context of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The report from the National Information Center (CNI) was published in October and is updated on the 25th of each month.

Detailed Crime Statistics

Regarding the crime of culpable homicide, Quintana Roo is positioned in first place nationally, with 115 cases, having the highest rate (11.2) when the national average is 3.48.

While in intentional injuries, 1,036 complaints were counted, with a monthly average of 115; in culpable injuries, per 100,000 women, the entity occupies fifth place, with 469 investigation files and is third in corruption of minors, with 81.

Additionally, as each month, Quintana Roo continues to lead nationally in victims of human trafficking, with 132 cases and a rate of 33.5%; it is in third place in emergency calls related to incidents of family violence, with 20,292 reports and first place in emergency requests related to incidents of partner aggression by entity, with 22,536 cases.

According to the femicide map, per 100,000 inhabitants, which is broken down by municipalities, Benito Juárez is among the seven cities with the most cases (seven).

Expert Analysis and Recommendations

In this sense, neurocriminologist Mónica Franco stated that strengthening support networks is relevant given this magnitude of violence.

Additionally, she said, the training of parents, mothers, and caregivers in prevention of violence, child exploitation, and trafficking is relevant.

“It is essential to strengthen all measures or actions in psychological, legal, and social matters to attend to all victims,” she assured and mentioned that the creation and dissemination of clear care routes is a priority, to avoid the increase in aggressions because possibly many of them have been violated several times.

In the state, the incidence of exploitation of persons for sexual purposes is 35.5%.

She asserted that coordination with hospitals and transportation routes is necessary; for example, in second-class intercity terminals, many children and adolescents in trafficking situations may circulate.

International Context

In 1993, the United Nations (UN) defined violence against women as any act of aggression based on belonging to the female sex, that has or may have as a result harm or physical, sexual, or psychological suffering towards them.

To raise awareness in society about this problem, in 1999 the UN General Assembly established November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
