Punta Brava, Quintana Roo — Quintana Roo has officially joined the National Strategy for Beach and Coastal Cleanup and Conservation 2025-2030, an initiative spearheaded by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo. Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa announced the state’s participation during a ceremony at Playa Punta Brava in Puerto Morelos, attended by Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection Mariana Boy Tamborrell.

A Unified Effort Against Plastic Pollution

The strategy, coordinated by Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources Alicia Bárcena Ibarra, aims to eliminate 100% of plastic waste from Mexico’s coasts within the next five years. Governor Lezama emphasized the urgency of the initiative, linking it to World Environment Day, which this year focuses on plastic pollution.

“Plastic pollution is not a distant or abstract problem—it’s in the water we drink, the food we eat, and the air we breathe,” Lezama stated. She highlighted Quintana Roo’s ongoing efforts, including bans on single-use plastics, environmental education programs, community recycling initiatives, and marine species protection measures.

Leadership and Commitment

Quintana Roo’s Secretary of Ecology and Environment, Óscar Rébora Aguilera, underscored the state’s proactive stance. “The health of our beaches reflects our relationship with nature,” he said. “We face profound environmental challenges, but we have a governor who not only recognizes these issues but acts decisively.”

The event was also attended by local officials, including Puerto Morelos Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz, Playa del Carmen Mayor Estefanía Mercado, Benito Juárez Mayor Ana Paty Peralta de la Peña, Tulum Mayor Diego Castañón, APIQROO Director General Vagner Elbior Vega, and Admiral Guadalupe Juan José Bernal Méndez, Commander of the 5th Naval Region.

Governor Lezama concluded with a call to action: “Let this strategy mark the beginning of a new era for our seas and beaches. From Quintana Roo, we say with actions, not just words: yes, it’s possible.”

The initiative aligns with broader national efforts under the Sheinbaum administration to address environmental degradation while advancing social equity and sustainable development.
