Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Authorities in Quintana Roo have arrested a couple for the alleged abuse and maltreatment of a minor, described by officials as acts of “unprecedented cruelty.” The mother and stepfather are accused of subjecting the child to extreme violence, including withholding food, burning him with cigarettes, and physical assault.
Rescue Operation Reveals Horrific Conditions
The State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) rescued the child on June 16 following an operation conducted by the Specialized Group for Addressing Family and Gender Violence (Geavig) in coordination with the Investigation Police. The minor exhibited severe signs of malnutrition and multiple injuries across his body.
Investigations revealed that the mother, identified as Perla Evelyn “N,” and her partner, José Miguel “N,” allegedly tied the child to a hammock hook, deprived him of food, and subjected him to brutal abuse. The stepfather is also accused of sexually assaulting the victim.
Systematic Abuse and Torture
According to official reports, the couple repeatedly beat the child with a belt, burned him with cigarettes, and attempted to suffocate him. On multiple occasions, they allegedly immobilized him by placing him inside a sack. Medical examinations confirmed the physical injuries and severe malnutrition, as the child was reportedly given only water when he asked for food.
Following the rescue, the minor was placed under specialized care, while the suspects were handed over to the Public Prosecutor’s Office. The FGE stated that all investigative avenues will be pursued to ensure the couple faces legal consequences for charges including family violence, torture, and aggravated rape.
Authorities Vow Justice
“This type of act will not go unpunished. Justice will be applied with the full force of the law to protect the victim’s rights,” a spokesperson for the Attorney General’s Office stated, emphasizing the importance of citizen reports in intervening in cases of child abuse.
The case has sparked outrage among local human rights organizations, which are demanding exemplary punishment for those involved. Authorities have withheld the child’s identity to protect his well-being and have initiated recovery protocols for his physical and emotional rehabilitation.
Authorities continue to investigate the case, with updates expected as legal proceedings advance.
